Punching Through Challenges: Upgrading Equipment Through Teamwork

In 2021, Marion team members recognized that two aging Trumpf punch machines—one more than 20 years old—would need replacement due to the risk of breakdowns and obsolete parts. The urgency escalated in February 2023 when one machine completely failed, requiring the team to stretch resources and production on the remaining machine.

After exhausting repair attempts, the team faced the challenge head-on, working to find a replacement. Collaboration with Kings Mountain leaders led to the discovery of a Trumpf 5000 that would become available within the fiscal year, meaning a new machine would arrive by June—an exciting but tight timeline.

In just 10 weeks, teams from across the organization and multiple facilities orchestrated the logistics removing the old machine, pouring reinforced concrete, arranging electrical work, and coordinating rigging and training. The Trumpf 5000 was installed in early July and became fully operational by August—a major upgrade that energized the Marion team.

Another opportunity arose to upgrade outdated equipment in July 2024. A second Trumpf 5000 became available to replace the remaining decades-old machine. Armed with experience from the first installation, the team followed a seamless process, aiming to complete the installation by fall.

However, Hurricane Helene struck in late September, disrupting plans and affecting the lives of many team members, friends, family, and neighbors. The storm caused widespread destruction in the region, with power outages, flooding, and road closures impacting operations and livelihoods alike.

Despite the devastation, Greenheck Group’s commitment to its people and operations shone through. Supplies were transported from other facilities, the plant became a hub for water distribution, and team members received support during those difficult weeks. By early December, the new Trumpf 5000 was operational, marking another milestone in the company’s ongoing investment in its operations and people, even in the face of a natural disaster.

The Marion facility’s transformation over the past two years underscores the power of collaboration, resourcefulness, and resilience. From equipment upgrades to weathering a historic storm, it’s clear that teamwork is at the heart of what we do.
