When we think about what makes our operations run smoothly, it’s easy to picture production lines and final products making their way to customers. As most of us know, it takes the efforts of an entire team to create the organizational success we see every day. One such team that is crucial to our successes is the Sourcing department.
This team of 50 plus people has evolved in response to the growing complexity and interdependence of the global supply chain. Sourcing handles everything from direct materials purchasing (the essential components used in our products) to indirect materials like safety gear and office supplies.
In a world where local and global events can disrupt supply chains overnight, the Sourcing team is constantly problem-solving. They also deal with trade compliance, which means navigating the intricate web of global regulations to keep our supply chain compliant and our products moving.
“We don’t just buy what we need, we buy smart,” said Tom Bugni, sr. strategic sourcing manager. “We oversee inflation and deflation impacts, manage tariffs, and ensure costs are kept in check to maintain our competitiveness.”
The impact of the Sourcing department on day-to-day operations cannot be overstated. Annually, they are responsible for $530 million in purchases, which directly influences our ability to deliver quality products to customers.
“Our job is not just about buying – it’s about strategy, foresight, and adaptability,” said Tom. “We have to navigate the global market and always be ready to meet the needs of our customers.”
For example, the team constantly monitors the stability of our supply chain, preparing for potential disruptions and managing risks to both local and global markets. This ensures that our products not only meet our customers’ needs but also comply with all necessary regulations.
The impact of Sourcing on day-to-day operations is immense. It’s a major reason why our products are built on time, why our materials are sourced responsibly, and why we maintain a competitive edge in a rapidly changing marketplace.
