Striving for a Zero-Accident Culture

Strong safety performance is key to a productive work environment. In June 2024, KVS plants in Tulsa and Kings Mountain each achieved 12 months with no OSHA or DART reported incidents. The Kings Mountain team completed over 400 days of continued safe working, while Tulsa recently overcame 2 incidents and is determined to beat their streak.

Both plants hosted a cookout to celebrate. Derek Boyd, global director of EHS, was joined by Joe Filipak, Travelers Insurance risk control consultant, and Nim Traeger, vice president of risk control. The team was presented with Travelers Award of Merit for outstanding performance in accident prevention.

“Choosing to work safely is a decision each of us make,” said Derek to a packed luncheon. “All of you have demonstrated to the rest of Greenheck Group that a zero-accident culture can be achieved through routine safety engagements, identifying hazards, and making corrective actions to eliminate risks.”

Team members at both locations engaged in cross-functional groups to develop a safety mission statement. Not only did this result in a new collaborative agreement, the exercise promoted teamwork among those who may not otherwise partake in strategic development.

Consistent engagement and leadership support are pivotal to empowering team members in hazard recognition and control. Quick fixes, audits, designated safety representatives, and incentives ensure that team members are aligned on the importance of prioritizing a safe workplace. Monthly, quarterly, and annual safety success incentives like meals and Gratitude points will continue in the future.

“Awarding team members for maintaining a safe workplace is a mutually beneficial partnership that places us as an employer of choice with a zero-accident culture,” said Ken Bush, general manager for KVS.
